Tragic Update on UPS Accident: Fatalities Increases to 13

The tally of fatalities due to the UPS cargo plane which caught fire and went down has now climbed to 13, as confirmed by official statements.

City Leader's Announcement

Traveling to the Teamsters’ vigil, I learned of a 13th person that lost their life as a result of the UPS flight 2976 accident,” wrote the city mayor in a public communication. “My prayers is with the loved ones, associates and peers of all who were taken in this recent disaster. We will overcome this collectively.”

Victims Identified

A release from UPS named the flight crew aboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-11 as Captain Richard Wartenberg, Co-pilot Lee Truitt, and International Relief Officer Dana Diamond.

“Our sympathies are extended to each staff member who has been affected and all in our community region – helping you and guaranteeing you get the care and resources you need is our priority,” the organization’s message expressed.

Probe Findings

National investigators disclosed that the jet’s wing ignited and an engine separated soon after liftoff from the aviation hub, leading to the jet to fall and explode into a blaze.

The safety agency announced it is examining the jet’s upkeep logs, that was in the state for repairs a period prior to the crash.

Aircraft data showed the plane was on the tarmac in the Texas city from early September to 18 October.

“We are knowledgeable that this jet was located in San Antonio,” said an official on the following day, without providing a exact period. “We will review every piece of maintenance that was performed, including the repair visit, right up to the day of the flight.”

Retrieval of Vital Items

The cockpit voice recorder and data recorder were recovered, and the engine was located on the tarmac.

The units – called data containers – were constructed to endure collision damage and intense temperatures from fires, and they appeared to be undamaged when discovered within the crash debris. Investigators will examining recordings from the devices.

Aircraft’s concluding flight details indicated an altitude of 475 feet and a velocity of 210 mph before the accident.

Repair Record

Based on FAA files dated last month, a crack on a component within the center wing fuel tank needed maintenance.

The company ST Engineering, which stated it provides airframe maintenance for the company’s jet and runs a maintenance center in Texas, refused to comment, but expressed it would cooperate fully when investigators approached it.

Services Continue

At the same time, the facility operations restarted that evening with its Next Day Air or evening process, representative the company official stated. The three runways at Louisville Muhammad Ali international airport were also back in operation.

The sorting center in Louisville is the organization’s biggest. The center hires more than twenty thousand workers in the region, handles three hundred trips each day and processes more than 400,000 parcels an hour.

Public Reaction

A candlelight vigil was organized on the night of that date by the regional Teamsters Union, which acts for workers at the Louisville airport, the company’s biggest freight center.

Teamsters Local 89, which stands for employees, started the vigil with a quiet tribute at 5.14pm, the approximate moment of the accident two days earlier.

“This event was so unexpected, so surprising,” the leader told the group of two hundred. “No one had a chance to part to any of those who we have mourned.”
