On his inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his term.
A Groundbreaking Leader
The young political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.
Rejecting advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”
Governing with Democratic Socialist Principles
Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.
The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.
A Sweeping Blueprint
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:
- Free childcare
- No-cost bus transit
- A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
- A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating Political Challenges
The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past tweets.
Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing essential functions: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit operation.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.
As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his remarks with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
